Due to some technical difficulties with WeVideo, my training had been switched around a bit. This week, I worked through the StoryMaps one and will be doing the WeVideo next week. Now for the actual reflection:
I really enjoyed working on StoryMaps. I didn’t expect it to be a website type format; in my mind, I had pictured a Twine kind of thing where there were bubbles and they’re connected through lines. Instead of that, it a simplified website-builder. I enjoyed how simple it was to make elements look good and clean, specially the different formats you could choose for your content. Walking through it with the Volcano story was very helpful too because I didn’t have to think up of a whole website to write just to practice the technical parts. Based on that walk through, I feel pretty confident helping someone else with it because it seems quite straight forward.
It was a little frustrating that once you create an image you can’t change the format of it into a gallery or a swipe-thru. It’s a minor hassle to delete it and try again. I can also foresee it being an issue if you want to go back and edit the page by changing the types of elements that things are. Luckily, the site allows you to insert elements before and after every existing element so that part is easy. I can also see it being limiting in terms of formats because there are only a select few you can choose from.
I think I will be using this tool in the future beyond just my training and tutoring duties because it makes information look pretty without much work. I’d like to look at customization more in depth the next time I make a story.
